The Buzz:

At the same time brothers Terry & Andy (Rasmus Hardiker & Harry Treadaway, respectfully) have teamed up with their cousin (Michelle Ryan), their friend (Jack Doolan), and the local psychopath (Ashley Thomas) to rob a bank in order to keep grandpa's (Alan Ford) home from being closed down, wouldn't you know it, zombies. What follows is a delightful little comedy-horror about the brothers trying to rescue granddad, and escape the undead hordes.

The Buzz:

This is the follow-up film to the widely successful British TV series, which followed four friends through their equivalent of High School.  If you are asking yourself why the series didn’t just continue, remember that British television shows for the most part are designed to end.  That is one major reason that adaptations of these series have rarely worked in America as we run our shows till there is only one remaining original cast member and all the humor is gone.  The show was great for its brutal honesty with how awkward and aggressively horny teenagers are, but also showing how stupid they are.  The film brings back all important cast members and starts out with their graduation and release to summer holidays.  What follows is the vacation that we all thought about having, and when we finally went fell to shit in the most glorious fashion.

THE BUZZ

If The Other Guys didn't give you your fill of Will Farrell (or you want to try something a bit stranger), then perhaps this would interest you; Farrell teamed up with just about every major player in the Mexican movie industry to create an entirely-in-Spanish comedy lampooning the traditional over-the-top telenovela style. Essentially, Farrell plays Armando Alvarez, the somewhat slow (but genuine) son of a well-off Mexican ranch owner, and he must save the ranch and the day from evil drug cartel members. The more you know about Mexico or Mexican programming, the closer to home this film will hit for you. It's very entertaining and clearly was made as a labor of love; whether you speak Spanish or not, there is a lot to like about this film, and it's a very easy recommendation for both fans of Farrell and those who think he's a bit played out at this point.

THE LIFE OF THE PARTY

This movie is loaded with Naked Gun type gags that make it really accessible for everyone, but the true gem here is how many tropes of Mexican daytime TV get mocked. The whole script is needlessly flowery and silly, and as someone who speaks Spanish, I was utterly amazed at how proficient at the language Will Farrell is. The best part is that even though he's super white, no one even seems to notice, which adds this extra layer of comedy when he's over-enunciating like he's onstage in a theater production at actors and actresses who clearly are speaking in a very natural tone. The script is awesome, the plot is fully aware of how contrived the general story is, and everything is acted excellently. Considering all the humor has to work in two languages at once, it's all very natural and manages to do the unthinkable by genuinely being funny. Also, and this may be minor to some, the costuming and music kicks as much ass as the wardrobe and soundtrack in Mexican westerns tend to.

POTENTIAL HANGOVERS

This movie is pretty damn silly. Anyone who's seen El Sabado Gigante is already going to be used to this, but even so, if you aren't a fan of sight gags, you may find this movie tiresome. Also, the whole movie is in Spanish except for an English speaker at the very beginning warning you that it's entirely in Spanish. This should tip you off that this film has a good deal of meta humor in it, which I have heard does not float everyone's boat. Also, it really does shine mostly for those who have seen enough latino programming to catch the fairly large number of references the movie makes, meaning it may be less of an experience for you if that's not really your thing. Considering this was made for Americans, though, it really does translate well.

THE ATMOSPHERE: Date Night, Casual Gathering, Cocktail Party

This really is a nice movie for casual occasions. Being that it's PG-13 and could conceivably be referred to as a cultural experience, it works for situations where less graphic material is desired. It's genuinely funny, has an easy to follow story, and is legitimately well made as a movie. You could do worse than to put it on for some open-minded, relaxed guests, and I hope you do! It really deserves more attention than it got.

DRINK:

Once for each simile or metaphor

Twice for each tobacco product smoked onscreen

Thrice for each time you hear or read English (excluding subtitles)

(Cartel Killer mode) Take a shot for each person who gets shot

The Trip is a quintessentially British movie about very subtle topics. The movie was edited together from a quasi-mockumentary TV miniseries following British actors/comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, playing fictional versions of themselves, as they take a gastronomic tour of Northern England. Along with a peek at their five-star dining experiences, shot in classic BBC-documentary style, we observe the subtleties of the two men's friendship and professional competition, their differences and similarities as 40-something actors, and a whole lot of James Bond references. The Trip is seldom laugh-out-loud funny, but it's far more believable than most comedies, which gives it much more of a personal impact than you might expect from a “goofy road trip movie.”

THE BUZZ

Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step-Brothers) directs a high-budget buddy cop action comedy starring Will Farrell and Marky Mark Wahlberg. You may have already decided in advance not to watch this movie because you don’t like Will Farrell movies or that you think it looked really stupid in the ads. As someone who generally doesn’t like movies that have Farrell as a front man, let me assure you that this film is vastly different. It features an array of talent including (among others and various cameos) Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes, Steve Coogan, Ice-T as an uncredited narrator, and the duo pair of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson as ubermacho supercops. Hilarious (seriously, it’s the funniest comedy I saw in 2011 after I skipped it in 2010 because I thought it would suck), exciting, and self-aware all the way through, this movie is in a vein much more like Tropic Thunder than Semi-Pro. What starts as a modernized Lethal Weapon turns into an elaborate, character-driven comedy-thriller rooted in the world of financial crime not unlike the dealings that got unearthed following the crash, and it makes for damn fine entertainment.

THE BUZZ

If you like British humor or “everything goes fucking terrible” humor (think Meet the Parents, but don't think any of the sequels if you want your day to continue to be nice), read no further; just go watch the movie, being sure it is the Frank Oz version. Hijinks ensue when a man shows up to a funeral attempting to blackmail the family of the recently deceased with....indecent information. The less you know, the better. Anyway, the already barely-holding-it-together dysfunctional British family does not cope with this news well, and lots of different jovial plot arcs combine to create a cacophonous crescendo that has utterly droll results. Bully! And if none of that works for you, the guy who played Wash from Firefly spends almost the entire movie on drugs while wearing nothing but non-sexual male nudity.

THE LIFE OF THE PARTY

You've seen this type of movie before; essentially Final Destination, but a comedy. Literally everything goes as wrong as possible over and over and over, and the audience gets to laugh at fictional grievous inconveniences. Being that this is a British movie, the humor starts out dry and eventually goes to the outlandish. I don't use the phrase “laugh out loud” unless I actually do, but it happened several times in this film. It's genuinely funny. So many of these sorts of comedies end up as “oh, check it out; someone got hit in the face again,” and Death at a Funeral never seems to need to drop into that. It's equally shocking, but not quite as you'd expect it to be. Also, all the characters are very well cast and acted. It's a genuine, empathetic performance, and you also don't frequently get that with comedies. My favorite was Uncle Alfie. Seriously, I want to rent that guy as a motivational speaker.

POTENTIAL HANGOVERS

The typical negatives of British film (from a 'Murican perspective) exist here as well. The accents on a couple of the characters are kindof tough to discern. This is easily circumvented by putting on subtitles like a Philistine, but to those who are used to it (hopefully most people), this isn't even an issue. Also, it starts pretty dry. The payoff is definitely great, but the movie does take its time getting there, even if every detail is important. I guess by default, that adds another flaw from a party-centered perspective; you absolutely have to pay attention to this movie to get benefits out of it, so don't put it on when you're feeling chatty.

THE ATMOSPHERE: Cocktail Party, Casual Gathering

This was a very fun movie. The characters are so empathetic and relatable that it's very easy to distinguish between them and their individual goals. And makes the stupid decisions even more painful to watch. I am willing to say that even though scatological jokes, non-sexual male nudity, and rampant swearing are part of this film, it's still a very classy humor endeavor. So I'd recommend it alongside a $9 Mai Thai or a mint julep in a chalice. Or an environment conducive to the aforementioned beverages. Or, you know, next time you want to drink and watch a good British comedy with friends. That works, too.

Drink:

Once whenever someone on drugs is onscreen (you'll know)

Every time Uncle Alfie says a line

Every time someone says the word eulogy

(Death at a Death at a Funeral mode) Chug the entire time the coffin is onscreen

The Buzz:

It's Halloween and stoner high school student Anton (Devon Sawa) can't find his parents (Fred Willard and Connie Ray). Mostly this is because they were killed in the night by the murderer terrorizing his town. When Anton and his buddies Pnub and Mick (Elden Henson and Seth Green) realize all evidence points to Anton they soon realize that his hand has become possessed by a demon. His hand murder's his friends, they return from the dead, his hand tries to kill his girlfriend (Jessica Alba), and generally blood and comedy ensue as Anton hunted down by a Druidic priestess played by Vivica Fox (funny, she doesn't LOOK Druish...).

About Us

Tanked Matinee is the place to go for good drinking movies. What do we mean by that? Simply speaking, we evaluate and recommend entertainment media based on how much fun it is to watch with friends on the sofa and a cold beer in hand.

Everyone knows "The Godfather" is a great movie, but is it as great to drink with as "Roadhouse?" We can appreciate "Citizen Kane" as a masterpiece of cinema, but is it as good a centerpiece for your party as "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians?"

Tanked Matinee appreciates film as art, but when you're kicking back on Friday night with a tall Rum & Coke, you're not looking for art, man, you want to be entertained. We're here to recommend the best movies for your night in, whether it's a big party, small get-together, or just a quiet night alone with a bottle of wine or three.
