DONNIE DARKO (2001)

Wednesday, 30 October 2013 21:13

The Buzz:

A young troubled teen (Jake Gyllenhaal) narrowly escapes death by following an “imaginary” friend named Frank out of the house one evening. Frank warns Donnie that in 28 days the world will end and Donnie begins seeing visions that force him to question reality and man's place in space and time. By the end of the film Donnie realizes he must make a tough choice and sacrifice in order to put right all he's done.

GALAXY OF TERROR (1981)

Sunday, 25 August 2013 04:00

The Buzz:

A ship on a rescue mission to a strange stormy planet uncovers a dark secret about their destination. The fate of the crew is grim as they struggle to understand what happened to the previous crew who crashed here and survive the horrors that lurk around every corner. This cult classic sci-fi thriller produced by B-Movie legend Roger Corman is a strange amalgamation of things that, while not working as well as one would like, doesn't stray too far off the mark.

LUNOPOLIS (2009)

Friday, 09 August 2013 14:36

The Buzz:

When discussing mockumentaries, most people think about This Is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, and other films that apply documentary-style filmmaking to fictional, comedic situations, often with the actors at least semi-improvising their performances to keep everything organic. Lunopolis takes the exact same techniques, but applies them to a dark science fiction story, combining “found footage” with “expert interviews” to delve into the mysterious “true story” of a “time-traveling secret society that lives on the moon.” It's like Chariots of the Gods, but with a much more interesting conspiracy and some shakey-cam action scenes mixed in. The end result is a surprisingly suspenseful film, with great performances from all the actors and plenty of fascinating theories that will stick with you, despite the fact that they're entirely made up.

The Buzz:

This computer-animated sci-fi film brings us into the world of the 41st millennium, based on the immensely popular Warhammer 40K game world created by Games Workshop. A detachment of space marines, gene-engineered super-soldiers (before you groan, these were pretty much the original such sci-fi staple, and most of the other examples you may know take their inspiration from this universe) from the Ultramarines chapter are sent on a mission to answer a distress beacon from a shrine-world guarded by their brothers-in-arms, the Imperial Fists.

PACIFIC RIM (2013)

Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:00

The Buzz:

In the near future, humanity is facing its greatest enemy ever, giant monsters, called Kaiju, who make Godzilla look like a level one Pokémon. In response the nations of the world have banded together to create a force of giant robots, called Jaegers, to take on these monsters from the deep. Humanity is on the brink of extinction, and it's down to the final battle between monster and machine.

The Buzz:

The Federation's war against the bugs continues in this sequel to 1997's Starship Troopers. A band of troopers have become stranded at an abandoned outpost after their operation goes pear-shaped. Inside they find Cap. Dax, who's been locked up and left behind after murdering his commanding officer. But soon the troopers have to rely on his help, as it turns out they have more than just the bugs outside the fence to worry about.

TREMORS 4: THE LEGEND BEGINS (2004)

Wednesday, 05 June 2013 05:13

The Buzz:

This is the one that follows the one that should have ended the series, but goes back in time to try to save the franchise.  Our regular readers might remember that I wrote a marathon piece on these films a while back.  But I felt they deserved their own respective entries for the short attention span person inside us all.  This film goes back in time to the very first time the Graboids appeared in the town of Perfection, known as Rejection at that time.  The film follows Hiram Gummer (Michael Gross as his own ancestor) and the outbreak of Dust Dragons (Graboids) at his miner camp.  The film takes back most of the ill will left from part three and leaves you with a good taste for the series in the end.

TREMORS 3: BACK TO PERFECTION (2001)

Wednesday, 05 June 2013 04:47

The Buzz:

This is the movie that shoved a poison dagger into the heart of any goodwill the previous entries to the saga instilled in the viewer.  Our regular readers might remember that I wrote a marathon piece on these films a while back.  But I felt they deserved their own respective entries for the short attention span person inside us all.  This is thought of as the worst giant worm movie ever made by many film historians and for good reason.  In this film Michael Gross comes back to his hometown to find it transformed into a tourist trap for Graboid enthusiasts.  And it turns out that they have a third life cycle, they fly using lit farts and are called “Ass Blasters.” Yeah…..

TREMORS 2: AFTERSHOCKS (1995)

Wednesday, 05 June 2013 04:33

The Buzz:

This is the movie that followed the one that started it all!  Our regular readers might remember that I wrote a marathon piece on these films a while back.  But I felt they deserved their own respective entries for the short attention span person inside us all.  This time around the Graboids have moved to Mexico for a vacation, and decided to attack an oil refinery.  I guess there was nothing else that vibrated between the original town and freaking Mexico.  This film takes place five years in the future and only brings back Michael Gross and Fred Ward.  The film also introduces us to the evolved form, stage two if you will, of the Graboids which are called Screamers.  How is Fred Ward going to save some random Mexicans from the evil that is the Graboids?

TREMORS (1990)

Wednesday, 05 June 2013 03:59

The Buzz:

It’s the film that started them all.  Our regular readers might remember that I wrote a marathon piece on these films a while back.  But I felt they deserved their own respective entries for the short attention span person inside us all.  This is thought of as the best giant worm movie ever made by many film historians, and has aged very well.  In the first installment we find very young Kevin Bacon and a not quite old yet version of Fred Ward getting their first glimpse of the monsters.  Being this is a film that was not supposed to set up any sequels, it is a well told story and has some great effects.  Overall this is a really fun film that can be appreciated without the other films, or much more with them.

About Us

Tanked Matinee is the place to go for good drinking movies. What do we mean by that? Simply speaking, we evaluate and recommend entertainment media based on how much fun it is to watch with friends on the sofa and a cold beer in hand.

Everyone knows "The Godfather" is a great movie, but is it as great to drink with as "Roadhouse?" We can appreciate "Citizen Kane" as a masterpiece of cinema, but is it as good a centerpiece for your party as "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians?"

Tanked Matinee appreciates film as art, but when you're kicking back on Friday night with a tall Rum & Coke, you're not looking for art, man, you want to be entertained. We're here to recommend the best movies for your night in, whether it's a big party, small get-together, or just a quiet night alone with a bottle of wine or three.
