RE-ANIMATOR (1985)

Friday, 06 September 2013 12:00

The Buzz:

Based (oh so incredibly loosely) on a series of short stories by H.P. Lovecraft, Re-Animator follows college medical student Dan Cain, who part-way into his third year meets the strange Herbert West. West is experimenting with a strange concoction that he believes can reanimate the dead. But their ghoulish experiments take a turn for the worse, and events quickly spiral out of the two student's control.

GRINDHOUSE (2007)

Thursday, 05 September 2013 23:24

The Buzz:

With their combined love of pop culture and just plain love
for the cinema, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino team up to make Grindhouse.  Some people consider it two films, Planet Terror and Death Proof, but to anyone who saw the theatrical release, we know it as the Grindhouse experience.  The film is made like it was a 70’s grindhouse theatre show complete with fake trailers directed by the likes of Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie, and Eli Roth.  The films were released individually without the trailers and cleaned up the picture, but for the real experience go for the combo.  For real fans of cinema it will be an amazing time, and for fans of horror and B movies, just sit back and fall in love.

GALAXY OF TERROR (1981)

Sunday, 25 August 2013 04:00

The Buzz:

A ship on a rescue mission to a strange stormy planet uncovers a dark secret about their destination. The fate of the crew is grim as they struggle to understand what happened to the previous crew who crashed here and survive the horrors that lurk around every corner. This cult classic sci-fi thriller produced by B-Movie legend Roger Corman is a strange amalgamation of things that, while not working as well as one would like, doesn't stray too far off the mark.

I SELL THE DEAD (2008)

Saturday, 25 May 2013 19:54

The Buzz:

Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) was just a child when he became the apprentice of local grave robber Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden). Eventually the duo comes across the darker side of grave robbing, that's right… the undead. From there a run in with a more ruthless rival group leads to the pair being framed for murder.

STAKE LAND (2010)

Wednesday, 15 May 2013 05:23

The Buzz:

In a dystopian future, the world has fallen under the curse of vampirism; it started as a disease and became a global epidemic.  We enter the story years into the decline of humanity and learn quickly that people have been reduced to living in pocket communities or they are members of the Brotherhood  (a religious sect that believes the zombies are a cleansing solution from God to make the Brotherhood the ultimate form of humanity).  We follow Mister and (for lack of a better word) his “adopted son” through this wasteland on the way to New Eden AKA Canada.  It’s a moody horror film that flew under the radar but thanks to Netflix is readily available to the public.

IN SEARCH OF LOVECRAFT (2008)

Friday, 10 May 2013 12:00

The Buzz:

I guess continuing my recent theme of low-budget independent movies, In Search of Lovecraft follows a news team who are stuck with the seemingly waste-of-time Halloween piece about the works of H.P. Lovecraft. However their journey into the Mythos of Lovecraft soon takes a turn for the weird, and they're soon fighting for their lives against a mysterious cult, and the real-life monsters of Lovecraft's stories.

FRIGHT NIGHT (2011)

Friday, 10 May 2013 00:00

The Buzz:

Twenty-six years after Fright Night (a cult film at best) was released, Hollywood decided that yet another flick cannot be left well enough alone and needed to be remade.  This time around the story is set in Las Vegas, rather than suburbia, but I think that adds well to the story because a night lifestyle is accepted there.  If I were a vampire I would definitely consider a city that never sleeps and is a tourist/hooker honeypot as my home.  This time Charley is a geek acting under cover as a cool kid in order to score major poon tang, which I totally respect.  Colin Farrell pulls off a very good Dandridge character; smoldering good looks help him out in this category.  They tweaked the Peter Vincent character a bit because late night horror shows don’t exist anymore.  Instead, he is an over the top Vegas showman/vampire killer, and man, David Tennant puts on a hell of a show.  Oh yeah, Anton Yelchin doesn’t suck like the original Charley did either, but the same cannot be said about Evil Ed.

FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)

Thursday, 09 May 2013 02:45

The Buzz:

Charley Brewster is your normal high school nerd except for the fact that he has a girlfriend (which, as a geek, I can say is pretty strange).  He does well at school and comes home to a loving mother and what we can assume is a metric ton of porn.  One of his vices is late night horror movies hosted by none other than the greatest vampire hunter of all time: Peter Vincent.  Oh, and there is one other thing, his new neighbor is a vampire and nobody believes Charley.  Is Jerry Dandridge really a vampire or is Charley just a little bit nuts?

MONKEY SHINES (1988)

Friday, 26 April 2013 19:26

The Buzz:

Most people that read the title above can't help cracking at least a bit of a smile, especially knowing that it supposedly applies to a legitimate, serious horror movie, rather than some kind of parody. Since monkeys are inherently hilarious and, in the case of the capuchins used in this movie, cuddly and adorable, building believable suspense via a tiny primate may seem like a tall order, but if anyone can achieve it, it would be master of horror George A. Romero. Monkey Shines starts with an interesting premise - a paralyzed man bonding with his trained helper monkey, and evolves into surprisingly nuanced and effective horror, if you can get over a few ridiculous elements.

THE THING (1982)

Monday, 15 April 2013 02:06

The Buzz:

The cold makes for terrible pains in the joints and bad driving in the snow, but also it lends itself to amazing sci-fi/horror.  A small team of men in the artic are interrupted one day by a bunch of Norwegian men in a helicopter seemingly hunting a malamute.  The American camp takes in the dog and unwittingly lets something horrible into the rest of their short lives.  After the dog literally peels apart like a banana and assimilates other beings.  One by one the people at the camp become “things” and paranoia takes the place of good sense and one of the best horror films ever made ensues.

About Us

Tanked Matinee is the place to go for good drinking movies. What do we mean by that? Simply speaking, we evaluate and recommend entertainment media based on how much fun it is to watch with friends on the sofa and a cold beer in hand.

Everyone knows "The Godfather" is a great movie, but is it as great to drink with as "Roadhouse?" We can appreciate "Citizen Kane" as a masterpiece of cinema, but is it as good a centerpiece for your party as "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians?"

Tanked Matinee appreciates film as art, but when you're kicking back on Friday night with a tall Rum & Coke, you're not looking for art, man, you want to be entertained. We're here to recommend the best movies for your night in, whether it's a big party, small get-together, or just a quiet night alone with a bottle of wine or three.
